What is a doula?
A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to individuals and families before, during, and after childbirth. Derived from the Greek word meaning "woman's servant," a doula offers non-medical assistance, advocacy, and empowerment to expectant parents as they navigate the profound journey of childbirth and early parenthood.
"Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers… strong, competent, capable mothers who know their inner strength."
— Barbara Katz Rothman
How doulas offer support
Emotional Support
Doulas offer unwavering emotional support, creating a nurturing and reassuring environment for expectant parents. Through active listening, empathy, and encouragement, doulas help individuals and families navigate the emotional ups and downs of pregnancy, labor, and beyond.
Physical Support
During labor, doulas employ a variety of comfort measures and relaxation techniques to alleviate discomfort and promote relaxation. From massage and positioning suggestions to breathing exercises and aromatherapy, doulas tailor their support to meet the unique needs and preferences of each client.
Informational Support
Doulas empower expectant parents by providing evidence-based information and resources to help them make informed decisions about their care. Whether discussing birth options, labor interventions, or newborn care practices, doulas serve as knowledgeable guides, advocating for their clients' autonomy and preferences.
Advocacy
Doulas advocate for their clients' rights and preferences within the healthcare system, helping them navigate medical procedures, communicate effectively with care providers, and make informed decisions that align with their values and wishes.
Postpartum Support
Beyond the birthing experience, doulas offer valuable postpartum support to assist families in adjusting to life with a newborn. From breastfeeding support and newborn care education to emotional guidance and practical assistance, doulas provide a compassionate presence during the early weeks of parenthood.
How doulas improve outcomes
Numerous studies have demonstrated the positive impact of doula support on birth outcomes and maternal well-being, including:
Reduced rates of cesarean sections and medical interventions
Shorter labors and fewer complications
Increased satisfaction with the birth experience
Enhanced breastfeeding initiation and success
Improved maternal-infant bonding and mental health
Our Philosophy
Compassion is the cornerstone of our care. It is the gentle touch, the reassuring voice, and the empathetic presence that permeates every interaction. We approach our work with an open heart and a non-judgmental attitude, meeting individuals and families wherever they are on their journey. We hold space for the full spectrum of emotions that arise during childbirth—the joy, the fear, the uncertainty, and the profound love. We honor the unique needs, preferences, and values of each client, tailoring our support to create a truly personalized birthing experience.

Rachel Twombly
As a Virginia transplant from California, I love the unique landscape, history, and community here in the valley that can’t be found elsewhere. I love to spend my time exploring new hiking trails, baking sourdough, and throwing board game nights with friends. Over the years I have felt called to serve women in my local community. Because of this, I am currently pursuing my RN with the goal of becoming a midwife. As a believer, I see birth as a beautiful opportunity to dive deeper into the knowledge and love of the God who created this new life. I am passionate about cultivating peace in the birthing space and partnering with moms as they prepare to welcome their new baby. I incorporate evidence-based practices with the intuition and desires of the mother, supporting them at hospitals, birthing centers, and their homes. I am excited to come alongside and support you during your birth!
Elisa Myers
I was born and raised in France and have lived in Chicago, Rhode Island, and Baltimore before moving to Lexington Virginia which truly feels like home now. I have been with my husband for 10 years and together we have 2 beautiful boys. My journey into motherhood started when I was 23, I had just completed my Bachelors of Fine Arts from Rhode Island School of Design, and I made the painful decision to end my pregnancy because of my fear of pregnancy, birth, and questioning my ability to give my baby a good life when I could hardly take care of myself. I believe now had I been given loving support, I would have chosen life and I would have been a good mother. Many years laters, I suffered a miscarriage before giving birth to my boys. Going through a miscarriage felt like opening an old wound I thought I had healed, and getting pregnant soon after instilled fear into my pregnancy and birth. My firstborn was born prematurely and during my labor I felt unheard and unsupported which led me to even greater fear, anxiety, and lack of confidence as a mother as I began my postpartum journey. However that experience also ignited an awe for how perfectly designed our bodies are to hold life, give birth, and care for our babies. I became passionate about learning everything I could about pregnancy and physiological birth and with the support of my doula I went on to have a redemptive homebirth, catching my baby in the water. That doula now feels like a sister to me and I now have a deep calling to be a sister in birth for other women. I want all pregnant women to feel heard, loved, and supported through this sacred time and enter postpartum knowing how incredibly intuitive and capable they are to be exactly the mother that baby needs.

I am originally from Lima, Peru. I was born in 1974 , and moved to the East coast of the US in 1996, I currently live in Waynesboro, Virginia with my 11 year old daughter Lilliana, my youngest sister Zylene who is autistic, and my cat Charlie. I attend Waynesboro Free Methodist, and have been there since 2019. Based on my experience, pregnancy is the most vulnerable state I have ever been in during my life. When I was pregnant, I was 38 years old. I was not married, I was without any family located near me and I was not familiar with my surroundings and the life style around me , I prayed to God to help me because I felt so overwhelmed. Pretty soon after , I had so many people that I didn’t know helping me and showing me love , in God’s way . My girl is 11 now and I love her immensely, and I am so thankful for everyone that helped me. If there is anyone out there that is pregnant, and needs to see the light and the love of God, If I can help, now that I know what it felt like, and I’m more mature and closer to God, I would be so happy to help. I am particularly excited to serve Spanish speakers!

I am a life long native of the Shenandoah Valley. I have been married to my husband Nick for 7 years and love spontaneous adventures with him in nature, spending time in my faith with God, and being with with my friends and family. I enjoy exploring the natural health world and learning more about our incredible bodies and how they function, as well as leading a wholistic lifestyle where I can.
For close to a decade I have had a keen interest in fertility and birth and all that surrounds a woman during this intimate and vulnerable time of growing and bringing a new precious life into this world. Just recently the doors opened to pursue training to be a certified doula. I am excited to partner with expectant moms in their journey to motherhood by offering my support, expertise, and guidance prior to, during, and after birth. It is my hope and goal to be a trustworthy advocate and support with my services as a certified doula. I am looking forward to serving you and your baby!
Witley Smith
Hi my name is Witley! Ever since I was a young girl I have always loved helping moms with their babies. Whether it was helping a mom care for the baby, or just holding them so the parent’s arms could get a break. I always admired each and every mom, and how they took the time to meet their baby’s needs. Mamas definitely have “super powers” in my opinion. As I grew up and started thinking about a career, I was always interested in fields that had to do with labor and delivery. I will never forget the first time I heard about doulas. I couldn’t stop thinking about it! Years went on and I worked other jobs, started my own cleaning business, but I was always drawn back to being a birth doula. In 2024, I took the plunge, signed up for a course to be a certified DONA International Birth Doula, traveled to my classes in Richmond VA, and I loved every minute of it! Each hour in class that passed confirmed that this was the path God wanted me to take. We learned so much from that class, but one of the things that really stuck out to me was a video we watched that showed footage of women in different countries, and how they all came together to support laboring mothers. From holding her in their arms while she labored, and telling her she has the strength to keep going, to patting her sweating forehead with a cool damp cloth she was supported with love. As I was watching I was filled with amazement and awe. I thought to myself that this is the kind of support and love each and every mom should get while they are going through this time in their life. I want you to know as your birth doula I will be right there beside you every step of the way through this journey. To the best of my ability I will care and support you. Encourage you, pray for you, and create a safe and uplifting birthing environment. We will be together till we reach the end where you finally get to hold your precious baby in your arms.
